Catalonia Yucatan Beach Review:
All inclusive resort for couples and families. The resort is located next door to the Catalonia Riviera Maya which is known for being a more active resort with more singles and younger couples. The Catalonia Yucatan Beach is an excellent option for families. It has a kids club and a children’s pool area. The resort is located within a gated community so it is a very safe area.
The beach is a nice white sand beach, but the water is a little rocky. This means it is an excellent area for snorkeling with lots of nearby coral and colorful fish, but it is advised to bring some water shoes along. There is snorkel equipment at the resort, but you can only check it out for an hour at a time. If you like to do lots of snorkeling, bring your own mask and snorkel.
The staff is really good at most Catalonia resorts. Bring some tip money along to reward them for their good service. Tips are not required, but they are certainly appreciated.
The food is good with lots of choices. Most people are very satisfied with the presentation and numerous options on the buffet. The a la carte restaurants are worth visiting, but there is no reservation system and sometimes the lines for a table can get extensive during the busy times of year.
It is a short cab ride to Playa del Carmen and the famous 5th Ave which is filled with bars, restaurants, and shops. If you have never been top Playa del Carmen, it is worth spending an evening walking along this tourist area. Make sure you have an agreement with the cab driver on what the cost of the ride will be before you enter the cab.
The main negative of this resort is that the rooms, theater, restaurant buildings, etc… are pretty dated. The main cause for concern is that the air conditioners break down often and the toilets don’t always flush on the first try. Many people request a room change, but this creates a confusing game of musical chairs at the front desk that often leaves people frustrated. Try to call ahead and request a specific room. If you need for it to be really quiet, don’t get a room next to the lobby where the buses drop people off and music is played late into the evenings. If you have problems walking, make sure you call ahead to get a first floor room. If you want a king size bed instead of two beds, make sure they know that before you get there.
